Choosing a COB LED spotlight starts with the surface you need to light. A product with the right power label can still have the wrong beam, mounting arrangement or component specification. A useful shortlist connects the lighting task to the housing, optic, COB and driver, then states which of those parts you want supplied.
This guide sets out a sequence for making that shortlist. It applies to buyers selecting a housing Kit for their own assembly and to buyers requesting a Full Set upgrade. The aim is a quotation that can be checked against a written requirement, rather than a model selected from appearance alone.
Write down the lighting task first
Describe what the spotlight must illuminate: a shelf, a display object, a counter or a larger presentation area. Record the mounting position and approximate distance to the target. Include the directions from which people will view it. These details help distinguish a tightly focused accent from a broader distribution and reveal where direct glare or reflections could matter.
Also describe the existing lighting around the target. A spotlight operates within that setting, so the same fitting can create a different visual effect in a bright interior and a darker one. A plan or annotated photograph can communicate the task without inventing a precise performance target before the layout has been assessed.
Select the mounting and housing platform
Decide whether the installation calls for track mounting, a recessed fitting or another arrangement. Check the space available for the body, the intended aiming movement and access to the driver. For track products, identify the actual track system and adapter requirement. Similar-looking connections or the same wire-count description should not be treated as proof of compatibility.
The KF-TL528 family groups several housing models on one product page. Its recorded adapter options are 2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire. Use the model selector to identify the housing being discussed, then confirm the adapter against the installation. A family name is helpful for browsing, but the selected model remains the unit of specification.
Choose a beam before comparing power
Beam selection should follow the target and mounting geometry. A narrower beam concentrates the distribution into a smaller area; a broader beam spreads it more widely. Neither is a universal improvement. The distance and aiming direction change how that distribution falls on a shelf or wall, so the angle alone cannot set the complete layout.
For a concrete shortlist, KF-TL423D70 offers 15°, 24°, 36° and 60° reflector options. Compare those options against the display width and intended aim. Request photometric information for the proposed assembly when the brief depends on coverage or intensity. A nominal beam angle is useful for comparison, but it is not a full description of the beam edge or spill light.
Assess the sample in the intended viewing direction
A sample viewed on a workbench answers different questions from a fitting aimed at merchandise. Review the visible source, reflections and beam overlap from the customer's likely position. Use the intended mounting distance where practical. Record what needs changing so the next configuration addresses an observed issue rather than an impression that the light should simply be stronger.
Specify colour temperature and colour rendering separately
Choose CCT in relation to the merchandise, finishes and surrounding light. Then state the colour-rendering requirement separately. Product records can list both, but one value does not substitute for the other. Colour samples or representative materials can help the buyer assess whether the proposed light gives an acceptable appearance in the intended setting.
KF-TL423D70 lists Full Set reference options of 3000K, 3500K and 4000K and CRI ≥90. These values provide a basis for an enquiry; they do not describe the unpowered housing Kit. Confirm the required combination and the selected COB in the Full Set quotation. Where a particular colour is important, ask what additional colour information is available for that light source.
Compare output at the same level
Keep the measurement scope consistent when comparing output. A COB module's lumen figure and a finished spotlight's lumen figure are not interchangeable. The complete system includes optical and driver effects. Ask for the configuration behind the number, including the source, operating conditions and optic, before using it to compare two quotations.
Missing data should remain an open question. For example, the current KF-TL427D100 record leaves power and light output unspecified. Its 15°, 24° and 36° beam options can support an initial optical discussion, but a numerical output requirement needs confirmation in the upgrade quotation. Do not infer a value from a neighbouring model or the housing size.
Match the driver to the selected COB
Once a COB is proposed, review its electrical requirements with the driver specification. Output current, operating voltage range, power limits and the intended operating conditions must be considered together. A driver brand or a nominal wattage by itself is not a compatibility decision. The mechanical space and the way heat leaves the assembly also need review.
If dimming is required, name the control method and the control equipment. Ask for confirmation of the specific driver and control combination rather than assuming that the word dimmable describes every installation. Keep this information with the selected housing model so the quotation covers the assembled system, including any component choice that changes its behaviour.
State the supply path and approval details
A housing Kit can be supplied directly for integration with the buyer's chosen components. Under the standard scope, the COB module, LED driver and holder are supplied separately by the buyer.
