A COB LED is the light source inside many commercial spotlights. It is not the complete spotlight, its reflector or its power supply. That distinction matters when a quotation offers a housing Kit: the housing can be ready for a selected light engine while the COB module, LED driver and holder remain separate component decisions.
This guide answers a practical question: what does the term COB tell you about a spotlight, and what must you still specify? Understanding the boundary helps a buyer compare a Kit quotation with a Full Set upgrade without treating them as the same delivery.
What chip-on-board describes
COB means chip-on-board. In LED lighting, multiple LED dies are mounted on a shared substrate and form a light-emitting assembly. Many white-light COB modules present a single visible emitting area covered by phosphor. The package construction and connections depend on the particular module; the name alone does not define its electrical arrangement.
Think of COB as a description of how the light source is packaged. It does not specify the housing material, reflector, mounting arrangement or driver. Two spotlights described as COB products can use different modules, operate at different currents and produce different light distributions. A useful specification therefore identifies the actual component and the complete luminaire configuration.
The emitting area and the reflector work together
A reflector collects light from the source and directs it into a beam. The source's emitting area and its position relative to the reflector affect that result. A COB that fits inside a housing is not automatically an optical match. Its holder, mounting position and relationship to the reflector also need to be checked.
This is why a component substitution deserves more attention than a brand-name comparison. Ask for the module dimensions and holder arrangement, then confirm the beam with the proposed assembly. A catalogue beam option is a starting point for selection, not evidence that any COB placed behind that reflector will reproduce it.
Separate the light source from the other components
A commercial COB spotlight brings several parts together. The housing supports and encloses the assembly. The reflector controls distribution. The heat sink provides a path for heat to leave the light source. The holder secures the COB in the intended position, and the LED driver supplies the electrical output required by the selected module.
Each part answers a different question. A suitable housing shape does not establish electrical compatibility. A driver with enough nominal power does not establish the right output current and voltage range. A recognised COB brand does not establish the finished beam. Review these relationships as one assembly while keeping each component identifiable in the quotation.
What COB does not guarantee
The packaging term does not guarantee a particular efficacy, service life, colour quality or glare performance. Those outcomes depend on the selected components and their operating conditions. A claim about an LED module also needs to be distinguished from a claim about the complete luminaire, which includes the driver and optical system.
For example, compare light-output figures only when their measurement scope is clear. A module figure and a finished-luminaire figure describe different points in the system. Ask whether a quoted value applies to the bare source or the assembled spotlight, and which current, colour temperature and optic were used. This makes comparisons more useful than assuming that every COB product has the same advantage.
Read the light specifications in context
Power, expressed in watts, describes electrical power at a stated point in the system. Luminous flux, expressed in lumens, describes light output. Neither tells you by itself how a display will look. The distribution of that light, the distance to the merchandise and the surrounding lighting all affect the result at the display surface.
Correlated colour temperature, or CCT, describes the apparent warmth or coolness of white light. Colour rendering index, or CRI, describes colour rendering relative to a reference source. They address different properties. Choosing a warmer white does not establish a higher CRI, and a CRI value does not tell you whether the beam is suitable for a small object or a wide shelf.
Use a real product record to narrow the choices
The KF-TL423D70 spotlight lists reflector beam options of 15°, 24°, 36° and 60°. Its Full Set reference fields include 3000K, 3500K and 4000K, with CRI ≥90. These are separate choices: the beam belongs to the optical selection, while the light-engine requirements belong to the complete-luminaire configuration.
Use those recorded options to form a request, then confirm the combination in the quotation. Do not interpret the reference fields as a promise that every possible component combination has been measured. If your brief depends on a particular beam shape or colour appearance, identify that requirement and ask for the relevant information for the proposed assembly.
Decide what you want delivered

Start with the housing model, beam option and intended use. Add the required CCT and colour-rendering information, then state whether you need a housing Kit or a quoted Full Set upgrade. If a specific COB or driver is required, include its model reference rather than only a brand name. Share the installation conditions that could affect the assembly or its operation.
